If your ball comes to rest in rough near the green you will need a firm strike to get the ball up and out. Heavy grass will tend to turn the club in your hand so that the ball comes out well left of your target. Grip the club firmly with your left hand (for right handers) and make an upright backswing and come down on the ball, holding your follow-through just a foot above the grass after impact. This will prevent you from hitting the ball with a lot of wrist action. The ball should pop out nicely and will roll more than normal.
