When playing a bunker shot it is very important to know the texture of the sand, to know what kind of shot to play. Take the long way into a trap sometimes and get a feel for the sand as you walk on it. You are not allowed to touch the sand in any way so let your feet feel how hard or soft it is under you. If the sand is soft, you will need to hit farther behind the ball. If it is hard, strike down hard just behind it.
