When playing in a tournament or match, always call over to your playing partner when you have to lift your ball for relief from such things as a sprinkler head, a dangerous animal, or a drainage pipe. You must notify your opponent or playing partners as to why you are going to take relief so that they can confirm that you are indeed entitled to relief. Always err on the side of caution instead of making a mistake and getting penalized.
