Best Putting Drills at Home

To be a great putter takes a lot of practice. I know that not every golfer wants to drive to the nearest golf course to practice putting after a long day at work, taking care of the kids, or doing whatever else keeps you busy during the day. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite putting drills to do at home. By taking just 5 or 10 minutes a day to do these at home putting drills, you will become a more confident putter on the course.

The great thing about the drills below is you can do them while putting on carpet, a rug, an indoor putting mat, or even without a ball at all!

At Home Putting Drills

  1. One Arm Putting
    • For this drill everything will be exactly the same in your putting stroke with a traditional two handed grip. The only difference is that you are going to use one arm at a time. Take 10 swings with the target side arm (if you’re right handed, this will be your left arm and if you’re left handed, it will be your right arm).
    • After 10 swings, switch to your non target side arm.
    • This will help you get a better feel for the muscles that you use in the putting stroke and in turn, will help you develop your putting path as well as a better putting tempo.

        2.  Cardboard box

  • For this drill, you are going to want to use an object that won’t damage the face of your putter. I find that all the delivery boxes from Amazon come in very handy for this drill. Put the box so one side is in the very middle of your stance. The edge should be perpendicular to your feet and parallel to your putter face.
  • Start with your putter right up against the box. Take your backswing and lightly swing into the box. This will help you ensure that your face is square at impact which will drastically reduce the number of pushed and pulled putts.

        3.  Putting Arc

  • For this drill you can either purchase a putting arc aid or you can recycle a 2x4 board leftover from the last home improvement project.
  • Place the tool of your choice on the ground and then line up your feet parallel to it. Place the heel of your putter on the edge of the tool that is farthest away from your feet. Take practice swings while keeping the heel of your putter in constant contact with the edge.
  • An important note here is to not just go back and forth as quickly as you can. Practice how you would on the putting green, reset each time as if you are about to hit a ball. Take your backswing, follow through, then reset again.
  • This will help build your muscle memory to keep your putter on the proper path which will help reduce the number of pushed and pulled putts.

      4.  Alignment Stick Putting

  • For this drill you will need to connect two alignment sticks with a rubber band at one end. You’ll place the top end of the stick that isn’t connected with a rubber band, under each underarm. Then you will place your putter on top of the connected sticks while both sticks are running up your arms. This creates a V and you keep the putter moving with your back, ribcage and the sticks.
  • From there, you just take a normal swing. This helps you stay on the proper putting plane because it forces you to use your back instead of your hands, wrists, or arms.
  • This one is a little complicated, so check out the video below!

Alignment Stick Demonstration

You'll recognize this video from a previous article, but the Alignment Stick Drill starts at 58 seconds.
